GTA 6 physics and world simulation
Weather, wildlife, crowds, police and how characters look and move, from Rockstar’s own material and the outlets that analysed it.
Rockstar says GTA 6’s weather is localised and persistent, with severe storms, and that Leonida has more than 170 animal species. From An Extended Look, outlets describe dense crowds, police that remember your face and car, and hair and skin rendering Digital Foundry calls a generational jump.

Predators that stalk their prey
One of Rockstar’s own Mount Kalaga images shows a cougar stalking deer at a stream. Other official images have alligators in the Grassrivers and divers among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle.

Looks that change
Officially, the Ultimate Edition adds a salon and a tattoo parlour with more than 50 designs, and An Extended Look shows Lucia in many hairstyles and disguises. PC Gamer noticed Jason lifting weights in Trailer 2 and wondered whether San Andreas-style body stats are back; Rockstar has not said.

Local weather and severe storms
Rockstar’s Owen Shepherd told Game Informer the weather system was re-engineered to be “much more localized and persistent”, so it can rain in one area while the next is clear. The preview describes severe storms with water pouring off rooftops and lampposts; VGC’s report adds tropical storms and hurricanes.

Wildlife everywhere in the trailers
Outlets catalogued animals in the background of the trailers: flamingos scattered by an airboat, dolphins, a raccoon in a trash can, a bodega cat on an ATM, a pet python and a great white shark in a marina.

Hair, sweat and skin
Digital Foundry calls character rendering the standout of An Extended Look: hair that moves from root to tip and lags behind as characters move, and skin and make-up that look slick with sweat in the humid heat.

Crowds that feel lived-in
Digital Foundry describes an unusually sophisticated crowd system in An Extended Look: packed clubs and beaches, heavy traffic, varied reactions, and people who persist as they move in and out of view. It cautions that curated footage cannot show how crowds handle chaos.

People react when you carry a gun
Dazed’s interview with Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, reported by Kotaku, describes a more grounded, reactive world than GTA V’s, in which walking down the street with a rifle gets a response from the city. Nelson later told TGG, as reported by Dexerto, that people now react as soon as you hold a gun and start moving away from you, while a long gun carried on your back is fine.

Talking to strangers, and a criminal profile
Push Square reports An Extended Look showing a held-trigger prompt for interacting with passers-by, as in Red Dead Redemption 2, with positive karma for petting a dog and negative for fleeing a robbery, and a “Criminal Profile” that builds from your behaviour.

Police remember what you look like
Push Square’s coverage of An Extended Look describes police logging your face, clothes, hair, whether you are armed and what you drive. Changing outfit or ditching the car helps you get away, and police no longer show on the minimap.

Shoot a tyre, flip a police car
TechRadar notes An Extended Look showing pursuers’ tyres shot out and police cars flipping and crashing. Digital Foundry adds that physics objects and destructible props look rich throughout.

In and on the water
An Extended Look shows swimming and scuba diving among fish, airboats, jet skis and canoes, and Lucia base-jumping from a skyscraper. Neither Rockstar nor outlets have gone into how the water itself is simulated.

Ray-traced light, through a full day
Digital Foundry says ray tracing is central to the lighting, for global illumination and reflections, and in its Trailer 2 analysis, reported by Pure Xbox, it backed the game’s real-time time-of-day changes. It measured An Extended Look at about 1440p and a steady 30fps on a standard PS5.

FAQ
Does GTA 6 have better physics than GTA 5?
What has been shown points that way: Digital Foundry calls An Extended Look one of the most impressive real-time showcases it has seen, with rich physics objects and destructible props. It cannot be measured properly until the game is out.
Does GTA 6 have dynamic weather?
Yes. Rockstar told Game Informer the weather is localised and persistent, so one area can be sunny while it rains nearby, and the preview describes severe storms.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
More than 170 species, according to Game Informer’s preview, including 60 types of bird and 30 land mammals.
Does GTA 6 run at 60fps?
Rockstar has not said. Digital Foundry measured An Extended Look at about 30fps on a standard PS5 and thinks a 60fps console mode is unlikely.
