Rockstar: Leonida is its biggest map yet, about twice GTA 5’s

In Game Informer’s cover story, Rockstar called Leonida its biggest map “by some degree”, reported as about twice the size of GTA 5’s, and described localised weather and more than 170 animal species.

Game Informer published its Grand Theft Auto VI cover story on September 29, 2026, with new details from Rockstar. According to Video Games Chronicle’s report on it, Rockstar’s head of development and co-studio head Aaron Garbut called Leonida the biggest map the studio has ever made “by some degree”, and described it as twice as large as GTA 5’s, with more detail.

Rockstar has still not given a figure in square miles, and neither report says exactly what the comparison measures.

On weather, Rockstar’s Owen Shepherd told Game Informer the system had been re-engineered to be much more localised and persistent, so conditions can differ from one area to the next. The preview describes severe storms with water pouring off roofs and lampposts.

The preview also puts Leonida’s wildlife at more than 170 species, including 60 types of bird and 30 land mammals, plus sharks, whales and jellyfish, and lists activities from base jumping, kayaking and scuba diving to billiards, mini golf, gyms and racing.
